To Friends

We stand together, so far apart,
My shoulder waits, but no one leans.
My tongue is still, and my ear listens,
Yet no one speaks.

The house stands, while the beams stand alone,
The floors creak and the walls buckle,
Yet the carpenter sees no need for support.
What's one more nail, amongst all the pain?

If you are going to leave me in the dark,
Put my eyes out.
I don't want to see you pain,
If you won't share it with me.

Won't you rest your head on my shoulder,
And your heart in my hands?
Your tongue will fall upon a kind ear,
And my lips upon your cheek.

Strength cannot stand alone,
And a hard heart can still be broken.
Let me place myself between you and the world.
I will suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune in your stead.

While you alone bear the weight,
I will wait.
If ever you can no longer bear,
I will be here.
